Elliptical Trainers

Why use an elliptical trainer?

An elliptical cross trainer will give you the combined benefits of cardio and strength training. The low impact exercise burns calories and strengthens and tones the upper body, whist the elliptical movement assists your balance and co-ordination making it suitable for both new and experienced users.

Is an elliptical just like a low impact running machine?

You use the same muscles, but it combines strength and cardio. So, because you use your arms you can strengthen and tone your upper body and torso.

Do I have to follow a program?

You can follow the program, or create your own by simply choosing the speed and resistance that you like.

Do I need good co-ordination?

The elliptical machine guides you through a constant movement, most people pick-up the technique after a few minutes of practice.

What's the point of going into reverse?

The reverse action exercises different muscles, especially the buttocks and hamstrings.

What is cardiovascular fitness?

It is the most important component of physical fitness. It includes the efficient operation of both the heart and lungs ‘the more active you are, the more invigorated you will feel’. In addition to exercise increasing your energy levels, exercising also reduces your chances of developing cardiovascular disease.

Frequency of exercise

You should try to exercise as often as possible but at least 3 times a week.

Duration of exercise

Try to do at least 20 minutes or more. Of course, the longer you go, the more calories and fat you’ll ‘burn’.

Warming and stretching

Essential for preparing your body for exercise. Start at a low intensity to allow your muscles to warm up and your heart to gradually increase. After exercise, always make sure you stretch the muscles you have been exercising.

Stay fit and healthy

A healthy balanced diet is essential for good health and keeping fit. Fruit and vegetables are
important components of a healthy diet and their sufficient daily consumption could help prevent
major diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases.
